Fence Calculator

Plan a fence line: how many posts, sections, and rails you need for a given length.

How it works

Divide the total length by the post spacing (commonly 8 ft) and round up for the number of sections. Posts equal sections plus one for the end. Rails are sections times the number of rails per span.

Formula

Sections = ⌈Length ÷ spacing⌉ · Posts = sections + 1 · Rails = sections × rails/section

Frequently asked questions

How far apart should fence posts be?

Most wood fences use 8 ft spacing; vinyl often uses 6 ft. Closer spacing is stronger and stiffer.

How many posts for a 100 ft fence?

At 8 ft spacing, about 13 sections and 14 posts, before adding extras for corners and gates.

How deep should fence posts go?

Bury about one-third of the post length, and below the frost line in cold climates, then set in gravel or concrete.
