How it works
Divide the floor area by the area of one tile to get the base count, then add a waste percentage (usually 10%, or 15% for diagonal layouts) for cuts and breakage. Round up to whole tiles and boxes.
Formula
Tiles = ⌈(Floor area ÷ Tile area) × (1 + waste%)⌉
Frequently asked questions
How much extra tile should I buy?
Add 10% for a standard straight layout, or 15–20% for diagonal or herringbone patterns and rooms with many cuts.
How many 12x12 tiles do I need for 100 square feet?
A 12×12 tile is exactly 1 square foot, so you need 100 tiles plus waste — about 110 with a 10% allowance.
Why buy tiles from the same batch?
Color and size can vary slightly between production batches, so matching batch numbers keeps the finish consistent.
