How it works

Mulch is sold in cubic yards (bulk) or 2 cubic foot bags. Multiply bed length × width × depth in feet for cubic feet, divide by 27 for yards, or by 2 for the number of bags.

Formula

Cubic yards = (L × W × Depth in ft) ÷ 27 · Bags = cubic feet ÷ 2

Frequently asked questions

How many bags of mulch are in a yard?

About 13.5 bags, since a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet and each standard bag holds 2 cubic feet.

How deep should mulch be?

A 2–3 inch layer is best. Deeper than 3–4 inches can suffocate roots and waste material.

How much does a yard of mulch cover?

One cubic yard covers about 100 square feet at 3 inches deep, or 160 square feet at 2 inches.
